The Edo traditional wedding is one rich in culture, and unique in every sense. In a typical Edo traditional wedding, the bride wears a red suede attire, with a beaded crown known as “Okuku” worn on her head. She also wears these beads, known as “Ivie”, on her hands and feet. The groom wears a white skirt and shirt beautiful decorated with Oba’s traditional staff.

The bride price is a very important factor in an Edo traditional wedding. The groom initially receives a list which includes foodstuffs and drinks. On the day of the traditional wedding, the items are received and an elder ensures that everything on the list is available.

The groom is made to pay a certain amount of money depending on the bride’s parents. A token is taken from this money as the bride price, and then the rest given to the groom to take care of his wife. The bride’s father then hands over his daughter to the groom by placing her on his laps seven times.

The elderly women from the bride’s family can now escort her to her husband’s house, after the blessing of her parents.
