Google is giving sweet names a rest after revealing its next-generation mobile operating system. On Thursday, 22nd August 2019, Google revealed that the Android Q will now have a different name. Along with a logo change, the new OS will now be called Android 10.
The vice president of product management for Android, Sameer Samat revealed this in an announcement blog post. He said,
“As a global operating system, it’s important that these names are clear and relatable for everyone in the world. So, this next release of Android will simply use the version number and be called Android 10. We think this change helps make release names simpler and more intuitive for our global community.”
Android 10 new logo
The new change will come with a new logo that Google says creates a more modern and accessible look. Although, the company gave no specific date for when the new software will be available. However, Google says the new logo will be unveiled in a few weeks along with the final release of the Android 10.
Android’s global brand director, Aude Gandon said the new Android 10 logo has a more modern wordmark. “The robot is what makes Android special. It makes it human, fun and approachable,” Gandon explained.
Before now, Google followed an interesting pattern of names in the last 10 years. It had named its new flavours of Android Operating System after something sweet or in alphabetical order. For instance, the last Android version was named Android Pie. There was also Oreo before that, then Nougat and Marshmallow.
In March, Google gave a snippet of the first preview version of the software. At its I/O developer conference in May, the tech giants also demoed some more features of the software. In fact, one of the major attraction of Android 10 is its new privacy features. The software comes with more location controls and a dedicated privacy section in the settings app.
The Android 10 OS will also come with support for foldable phones. It will have faster app launches and gesture navigation. Some devices have already been certified for the Android 10 beta program. Huawei’s Mate 20 Pro, LG G8, OnePlus 6 and 7 Pro, as well as Google’s line of Pixel phones among others.
