Instagram has announced that it is now rolling out a new feature in seven countries. They are testing out a feature that will hide likes on the app. The test was first introduced in Canada and six more countries have now been added.

The Facebook company announced that it will start testing a new feature that will hide likes in May. Ireland, Australia, Brazil, Italy, Japan and New Zealand are now part of the countries where the feature is being tested.

Users will be able to see their like counts but others won’t be able to. It pretty much hides users’ public counts on photos and videos in the feed and on their profiles. Instagram says it’s doing this to allow followers to focus on the photos being shared and not the likes.

Likes are perceived to put a lot of pressure on young Instagram users who bank on these things for popularity. People mostly like to post photos that will garner more likes. Instagram hopes that this new feature will mean people will post more of what they like and not do it just for the likes.

Facebook’s director of policy in Australia and New Zealand, Mia Garlick said, “We want Instagram to be a place where people feel comfortable expressing themselves. We hope this test will remove the pressure of how many likes a post will receive, so you can focus on sharing the things you love.”

This may take a toll, however, on influencers who rely on their Instagram likes and popularity to make money. People who are popular on Instagram make money from the number of likes they get on certain sponsored content for example. The likes also show brands how much engagement an influencer’s post gets before they run an ad with them. With it being taken off, it may make it more difficult for people to make money from Instagram.

Instagram has confirmed however that the feature will not affect the analytic tools used by businesses and creators. The feature will probably get to African countries after it’s been tested.
