The year began with a list of New Year resolutions about how you were going to begin living healthier.

From the new diet to the gym registration, you decided to go all out with this and felt like you were going to out-do your expectations.

It’s also about that time of the year when we look back at those health goals and bemoan ourselves for a job not well done.

Relax, it’s not over just yet.

The key to a healthier lifestyle is right here – keep it simple.

Try not to overdo by jumping the gun without asking yourself ‘how’. How do you start living a healthier lifestyle without falling back into your old habits a week later?

The best way to attain healthy goals is to make it as simple as possible.

Begin small and not with a big bang. Do not overwhelm yourself with too much in such little time.

Give your body and mind time to process the changes that are about to be made. Just simply give yourself room to adjust and adapt to the new lifestyle.

The truth is, in order to improve your health and well-being, some lifestyle changes do have to be made. It’s inevitable. You have to put in the work to get in the result.

Steps to Starting a Healthier Lifestyle

Change your mind-set

Healthy living is more than the gym and veggies. Health is not a destination, it’s not something you arrive at and believe that’s that.

No! Health is a thrilling lifetime journey that takes your entire lifetime. It’s a way of life and is so worth it.

Once you believe in yourself and your ability to do right by you, you can do just about anything. Every excuse and fear you’ve been experiencing is all in your head. So, change your mind-set, that’s the first step to a healthier you.

Set your Goals

Ask yourself why you want to live healthier. What’s that purpose driving your decision?

Write down your short and long term goals of who you would like to be and set out rewards for when you reach these goals.

There’s nothing like a reward to keep you going. It can be a trip or even as simple as a beauty spa treatment.

Get a Coach or Mentor

There are a number of coaches who are readily available to help you through this lifetime journey.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be a professional. Getting someone who you know you can listen to and obey is advisable.

Someone who has your best interest at heart is even better. This can be your spouse, a professional lifestyle coach, a pastor or counsellor. Who can you reach out to as a guide?

Develop Meaningful Connections

You need a support team in place to keep you motivated.

Even better, there are people who want to make this same lifestyle changes with you. It’s advisable to have said people around you to motivate you to attain your goals of being a healthier you.

Can you think of anyone right now?

Identify and let go of your Unhealthy Lifestyle Choices

Even if you don’t want to admit it, you do have some unhealthy habits you’re trying to rid yourself of.

Nobody is perfect and we all want to live our life to the fullest in all our imperfect glory.

So take a minute to identify all the unhealthy lifestyle choices you seem to be making. Some of these could be:

  • Poor diet
  • Seeping less
  • Smoking or Drinking
  • Too much caffeine
  • Keeping a dirty environment
  • Less physical activity

Let go of your unhealthy lifestyle choices

It’s one thing to know them and another to avoid them.

Do the latter in order to scale up the ladder to healthy living. It might not be easy to just stop, so that’s when you need to follow this next step.

Begin the journey to healthy living gradually

Don’t take drastic steps by changing your diet entirely to vegetables only, or something in that order. Start gradually by:

  • Taking the stairs instead of the elevator
  • Increasing your daily water intake
  • Adding vegetable to at least two of your daily meal
  • Using herbs in your food
  • Increasing your fruit intake
  • Sleeping more
  • Taking strolls
  • Doing some house chores
  • Reading positive mind-stimulating books, etc

Stick to it

At this point, you need your will power to keep you going. Stick to these new lifestyle changes until they become your new habit.

What’s better than a habit of drinking water or walking? The answer is nothing.

These are the simplest and effective steps to starting that healthy lifestyle journey now.

Practice them and share your story.
