The year is coming to an end and it is time for reflections. Several things have taken the world of tech by storm in 2019, however, we will be highlighting the five that got our attention the most.

Tesla Built a Battery To Go One Million Miles

One step forward for the world of tech, a giant leap for electric cars.

A huge challenge electric cars face is declining capacity in batteries. This replacement could require high financial and environmental cost.

However, that could be solved with battery technology developed by Tesla’s head of battery research, Jeff Danh. Danh, who is also an academic at the University of Dalhousie, published a paper detailing a battery design based around a series of pouches that could last a million miles without losing capacity, even with constant recharging.

Using Danh’s design, the battery’s capacity fell only 4 percent after being recharged 3,400 times.

Tech is also shaping how we fly!

A 15-minute flight from Vancouver powered by Habour Air could be the future of air travel. Harbour Air, currently flies turboprop planes between the Canadian city and local island communities. Working with Australian engineering firm MagniX, it retrofitted a 62-year-old six-seater seaplane with an electric motor and battery with 160km range. After the trial, which was successful, Harbour Air is hoping to electrify its entire fleet. However, regulatory tests may mean that will have to wait for a while.

5G Networks

Tech is still advancing!

The 5th generation of mobile internet connectivity also became available for the first time in 2019. It will give us super-fast downloads and upload speeds as well as more stable connections. However, the 5G mobile data network is mostly still expensive and functioning in confined areas or major cities. Expectations are that by year 2020, the technology will be more mainstream.

Tesla’s Cybertruck

And… Elon Musk is disrupting the world of tech again!

Tesla built a futuristic high tech vehicle straight out of a sci-fi movie. The Cybertruck is an all-electric battery-powered, light commercial vehicle. The Cybertruck has 3 models, with ranging estimates of 250–500 miles and an estimated 0–60 mph time of 2.9–6.5 seconds, depending on the model.

During its unveiling, Tesla’s founder, Elon Musk demonstrated the vehicle’s durability. However, its windows were damaged when during the tests due to a ‘technicality’. Production should start in late 2021 and expand to offer more configurations in 2022.

Deepfakes AI Media Manipulation

Photoshop, hold my cup!

Deepfakes are media that take a person in an existing image or video and replace them with someone else’s likeness using the help of artificial intelligence. They usually combine and superimpose existing media onto source media using machine learning techniques. Therefore, this can make a fake video seemingly authentic.

TikTok is exploring how to use the technology in its app with tests in Brazil and it is certain that its use will also make for an interesting observation in 2020.

Technology makes humans more efficient and simplifies processes when properly applied. It is certain that more technological improvements will take the world by storm in 2020 and also change the world and how we see it.
